The Universidad de Costa Rica is a public university founded in 1940. It is a mayor university with five campuses in various regions of Costa Rica. It offers over sixty college majors and masters and doctoral degrees in academic and professional fields. The university has academic agreements with forty-three countries and with international institutions and organizations. The graduate programs in the Department of Geology offer masters degrees in three fields and have sixty-three faculty members.
To provide five rural communities with practical knowledge about various geological aspects with the purpose of improving the knowledge in the communities about natural and socio-natural dangers that become risk factors. Moreover, the project intends to improve the information in the communities about water resource management. With the dissemination of knowledge, the project aims to strengthen the rural communities and increase the management of risks, emphasizing a gender focus.
Elena Badilla Coto is the Project Investigator. Elena Badilla Coto has a Masters degree in Geography Information Systems from International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC-Holland). She is the Coordinator of the Masters Program in Risks Management and Emergency Response. She teaches courses in general geology, geomorphology, and remote perception in the Masters Program of the Department of Geology. She has published scholarly articles in national and international journals.
